The present paper comprises Part II-Α of a revision of Enchirella Giesbrecht, 1888. The female from the type area is described in extenso, providing many new details on copepod external anatomy, the significance of which is discussed. Reference is made to Part I (Von Vaupel Klein, in press a) for a general introduction and for an outline of this series of publications.

Two cases of apparent niche-partitioning and one case of alleged habitat-segregation in the calanoid copepod genus Euchirella are described. These are examined with regard to their possible implications for making generalizations about the structure of biocoenoses and about mechanisms of speciation in the pelagic marine environment.

The absence/presence routine of character coding is examined in regard to minimizing its inherent redundancy effects with the purpose of optimizing the structuring of a comprehensive, binary datamatrix. Cladistic analytical procedures are next evaluated with respect to the successive use of such a datamatrix at different hierarchical levels. It is concluded that performing a stepwise analysis has various advantages over the more oft en employed techniques, i.e., the ‘total analysis’ routines and the ‘partitioned’ approaches.

The merits of Em. Prof. Dr W. Vervoort in the field of systematic copepodology are evaluated, such within the context of his personal approach towards science as well as towards his students. It is concluded that Vervoort's work continues to exert a major influence on the study of taxonomy and of biogeography of free-living copepods up to the present day.
